The other release method is a mass release. This is when the butterflies are released from a decorated box, or basket. The number of butterflies for a mass release can range from a couple dozen on up to how spectacular you would like to make it. Generally, the bride and groom do the mass release, but there are no set rules.
For your reception, you can decorate with butterflies. The Painted Ladies look lovely in small terrarium centerpieces. You can use a mixture of butterflies in larger displays. A butterfly breeder can help talk over all of the different options you have with butterflies as a display.
No, you probably won't be able to color coordinate the butterflies to your wedding colors. But with the display they give with their release, no one will notice they aren't your wedding colors. You can't release them inside of buildings. Unfortunately, they would not make it outside, so they would not survive. And if it is raining, your butterflies will not fly. But you can then use them for displays at your reception and release them at a more suitable time. Because butterflies are cold blooded, the temperatures must be at least 60 degrees or higher. Some butterflies require at least 70 degrees or higher for a successful release. Generally for this area, and depending on the temperatures, butterflies can be released starting in May and going thru till September.
